The French Laundry is a little bit of American luxury cuisine in Yountville, in California's Nappa Valley. The building housing the restaurant was built in the 1880s and served as a saloon before emerging as a French steam laundry in the 1920's. in 1974 the building was purchased with the aim of turning it into a restaurant and as the town knew the French Laundry name, it stuck.

In 1992 Thomas Keller bought the restaurant and reestablished it as an American restaurant with French influences. The opening night was a total disaster but today it has been named among the ten very best restaurants by Esquires John Mariani.
