For more than 60 years
Sub-Zero have pioneered innovation, producing some of the
very best home refrigeration products that are appealing aesthetically with some of the most advanced technological solutions. The company prides themselves on being able to meet the needs of any customer for virtually any refrigeration need and they have earned the position of being the
very best.
Life for the company began during the 1930s when Westye F. Bakke worked as a refrigeration consultant for Frank Lloyd Wright; he created units that would fit the projects of Wright. It was in 1943 that Bakke built the first free standing freezer in his own basement and this was just the beginning. Wrights son Bud joined the company full time in the 50s and spent time researching the field of refrigeration and his many experiments brought
Sub-Zero recognition nationally.
The company continued to expand and in the 60s designed
luxury refrigeration built into furniture; these included the office credenza, bar counter and end table. By the end of 1967 the built in refrigeration units were the largest selling model, accounting for more than 70% of the sales. During 1972 and 1979 the sales took off when they increased tenfold as
Sub-Zero created a network of distributors and made advancements in technology.
Buds son entered into the company towards the end of the 70s and during the 1980s the award winning
luxury 500 series was introduced. This featured ergonomics of the
very best with better lighting, crisper drawers included, temperature controls that were individual and improved seals on the doors. Integrated refrigeration was seen with the 700 series in 1995. This was an entirely new design with the unit merging seamlessly into some of the
finest cabinets. The year 2000 saw the emergence of state of the art manufacturing facilities over 350,000 square feet and a 30,000 square foot training center built on site for product development. By 2008 a totally new built in refrigeration line was launched thanks to advanced technologies to help keep food fresher for longer. The system included air filtration that was based on systems used by NASA, microbiological water filter and technology featured in the cooking instruments of Wolf.
Sub-Zero together with Wolf has designed refrigeration that does not look like refrigeration but more like a work of art. Their designs are without limits, some of the
