A. Lange and Soehne belongs today to the world's
very best luxury watchmakers. Ferdinand A. Lange was born in 1815 and his parents separated when he was young, leaving him to be brought up in the home of an acquainted merchant's family. It was thanks to this family that Lange was able to attend the Technical Institute of Education, where training was given to him typically only available to technicians or engineers of the
very best.
During his studies, Lange took up an apprenticeship with a renowned master of clockmakers, Gutkaes, who very quickly realized that the young Lange had a hidden talent when it came to
luxury watchmaking. Upon completion of the apprenticeship, Lange took employment with one of Europe’s
very best clockmakers where he broadened his knowledge. In 1841, Lange returned to Gutkaes and due to the vast knowledge he had gained, quickly became one of the companies driving forces. He also wed one of the co-owners, Antonia Gutkaes. It was in 1845 that Lange established the first production facility for the design of pocket watches in Glashuette. Here he took on 15 people from the impoverished regions, with the intention of being able to turn them into extremely accomplished makers of fine
luxury watches. In order to be able to do this, long negotiations took place between the Saxony Government and Lange, they eventually agreed to support him and granted Lange a loan of 7820 thalers. Lange had a passion from the very beginning to be able to design some of the world’s most consistent,
