The
Mille Miglia 1st edition was run in 1927 attracting some 77 very strong entries from some of the very best leaders in Italian drivers, of which 55 were to cross the finish line. Public figures, notably, Leandro Arpinati, the mayor of Bologna and the President of the Italian football club attended the race. Safety issues were of a major concern regarding spectators and more than 25,000 soldiers lined the route to keep control of the onlookers. Throughout the whole of the race drivers had to observe regular traffic regulations, which made for a very challenging race.
The race route takes drivers clockwise from Brescia to the
luxury scenes of Rome and back, crossing seven regions including Lombardy, Veneto, Emilia Romagna, the Marches, Umbria and Lazio, taking in Tuscany on the return trip. Following on from the enormous success the race enjoyed last year the route in 2010 will also include the mountain roads of Terminillo as drivers go onwards to Rome and Parma and Cremona on the return journey. Each of the roads travelled has its own history,
lifestyle and its own traditions, there have been changes over the years but one thing has remained unchanged, the passion that was inspired by Freccia Rossa, symbol of the
Mille Miglia.
