The New Craftsmen offers clients with very best of British craft products ranging from jewellery, furnishings to accessories. The focus and purpose of this cooperative is to emphasise the importance and value of items made with care and dedication. They will be opening their first pop up on Monday 3rd of December at 5 Carlos Place, a town house at the heart of Mayfair, London.
In a world that is filled with fast fashion, The New Craftsmen are searching for the true heritage products that characterize the nature of the British Isles. They give each new discovery an opportunity to connect with the modern world. This also supports the exceptional makers behind each product. One of the fascinating features of the pop up will be the presence of the makers themselves explaining and demonstrating the production process to interested and discerning customers.
The concept behind the project is to create luxury products that have a true intrinsic quality. They are created to last and to truly accomplish a functional purpose, they are fashion statements nor clothing with lifespans measured in months. These are quality products created by craftsmen who have dedicated their lives to learning and perfecting their individual skills and talents.
A collaboration with the successful furniture designer Gareth Neal and Kevin Gauld of the Orkney Furniture company will be their first step in promoting the link between traditional designs and methods with a modern element. Together they will be working on developing, or rather redeveloping, the traditional Orkney chair. They will then come together in London to actually create the chair in the workshop located at 5 Carlos Place during the pop up.
A community of skilled craftsmen is slowly being built up by the enterprising company. These include relationships with experts in furniture making, glassblowers, lino printers, jewellery smiths and many more. Each of these members share the ideals and values that form the basis of The New Craftsmen.
Custom made objects and garments form another significant part of The New Craftsmen concept. Made to measure gansey sweaters are one of the most attractive options that they offer. These sweaters are steeped in the traditions and history of Scottish and British fishermen. They are knitted to serve a lifetime protecting the fishermen from the harsh and unforgiving elements out at sea. The New Craftsmen offer customers with the opportunity to order a custom made gansey sweater. This adds a twist of luxury to an item whose nature is purely practical and relies on quality above anything else.
After the pop up the organization plans to continue on increasing its impressive stable of makers to over a hundred individuals and firms. By 2013 they plan on opening a permanent showroom in Mayfair, London where they will continue selling limited edition products made by some of the finest craftsmen on the British Isles.
