Chateau Pichon-Barons for short is the name of Chateau Longueville au Baron de Pichon-Longueville, home to some of the very best wines in the world. The Chateau was built in 1851 and has long been recognized as one of the most important Chateaus of France. Today the Chateau is managed by Christian Seely who restored the reputation of Pichon-Baron thanks to a string of some of the
very best and most admirable
luxury wines. In 1991 a newly equipped chai was completed along with a new bottling line and additional new practices were introduced in the cellars. Seely has pushed the quality of the
wine higher and higher thanks to strict selection. Seely ensured that the historic heart of the Chateau remained with the central 40 hectares being dedicated to grand vin. He also introduced much smaller fermentation vats which allowed the winemaker to perform small plot by plot vinifications and has an unwavering commitment to producing
wines of
luxury. The vineyards at Pichon-Baron cover more than 72 hectares in total of typical gravel which are planted with 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot. Harvesting of the
wine at the Chateau is still manual with the fruit being de-stemmed before the fermentation process takes place in stainless steel tanks that are temperature controlled. The
wine is then transferred into some of the
very best French oak barrels and stored for a
period of up to 18 months. The grand vin Chateau Longueville au Baron de Pichon-Longueville, otherwise known as Pichon-Baron typically produces around 24000 cases of
luxury wine. The second
wine, Les Tourelles de Longueville was introduced with the 1986 vintage with around 12000 cases being produced. Today the
wine has a silky and more elegant taste which accounts for the fact that Cabernet Sauvignon is made up of more than 70% of the blend. Pitchon-Baron remains a very substantial
wine and it has what some say is an undeniable charm of its own. The
wine therefore has become very popular with those who love some of the
very best luxury Bordeaux
wines.The Chateau Pichon-Baron 2010
wine was harvested from the end of September and is a blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon and 21% Merlot grapes with a pH that is around 3.7 which is slightly more acidic than the 2009. There are notes in the
wine of black plums, black cherries and damsons, however it is not in an over fruity way. The style of the
wine is sweet and harmonious and is compelling. The flavor of the
wine lingers and disappears very slowly.
