Le Gavroche is a prestigious luxury restaurant in the heart of Mayfair London which opened its doors in 1967 by Michel and Albert Roux, then situated on Sloane Street. The establishment serves some of the very best French food with many of the dishes being served with a modern twist.

Some of the most famous of all dishes served in this prestigious restaurant includes the Souffle Suissesse which is cheese soufflé that has been baked on double cream. Omelette Rothschild and LE Caneton Gavroche, whole poached duck served in a light consommé that is served with three sauces are among the very best.

Alberts son is the current chef patron since taking over the running of the kitchen in 1991 and under his watchful eye the restaurant has been consistently places among the top 50 restaurants in the world. In 1982 it became the first ever restaurant in the United Kingdom to be given the prestigious award of three coveted Michelin stars. Many famous chefs of the very best, known around the world have worked in the superb kitchens including Marco Pierre White, Gordon Ramsey, Marcus Wareing and Bryn Williams.

Le Gavroche restaurant is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as having served one of the most expensive luxury meals per head in 1997. The meal was enjoyed by three diners who spent USD 20,945 including food, cigars, spirits and six bottles of wine.

Before the opening of the Le Gavroche in London there were no landmark restaurants and very little competition along with a lack of French cuisine. At that time the majority of people went to hotels to enjoy luxury food. Albert Roux took advantage of this by opening the restaurant along with his younger brother, at that time the establishment seated 50 people. At the time the brothers were in London working as personal chefs to the Rothschild and Cazelet families, cooking for some of the most prestigious of individuals. The brothers introduced dishes such as foie gras and pullet de bresse into London and the restaurant quickly became a flagship among the rich thanks to the superb luxury cuisine and atmosphere of the very best.

Today the restaurant delivers what they call classic French food for the new generation, cuisine with a twist. There is a classic joke that has stuck around which also includes Harrods and Harvey Nichols too, the joke is where should you go in the event of a nuclear attack? Le Gavroche, because nothing awful ever happens there, its all good. The restaurant was given its name by the brothers who have a passion for Les Miserables, and the character Gavroche.
