Carnival of Venice
The Carnival of Venice is held annually in Italy and typically begins two weeks prior to Ash Wednesday and ends on Shrove Tuesday. The carnival originally began to celebrate and express throughout classes using masks to hide the identity. Today more than 30,000 individuals travel to Italy to take part in the carnival.
One of the most important events during the carnival is for the best mask. The decision is made by a jury of international fashion and costume designers. In the past some outlandish masks have taken the coveted award.
Anyone considering a vacation to Italy may wish to take their vacation during the Carnival of Venice to take in the superb atmosphere when the town comes alive in celebration. Masks based on those in the carnival of Venice have been featured in numerous films, one in particular being Eyes Wide Shut where Tom Cruise infiltrates a masked ball similar to the carnival.
