At the very top end of the scale, some of the rarest and the most super-expensive
wines are often the most costliest item that is on the menu. Some of the most exceptional vintages from some of the
very best of vineyards may actually sell for many thousands of dollars per bottle. The expensive red
wines along with their complex subtleties are usually a great deal more costly than other expensive white or rubies.
Here we take a look at a few of the most expensive
wines in the world.
1992 Screaming Eagle
Recently at an auction in the Napa Valley which was a charity event, a lot of six magnums of some superb
wines with the unusual name of Screaming Eagle were sold for around $500,000. Along with the winner bidder receiving the
wines, the lot included a fantastic
luxury dinner at the winery.
1945 Chateau Mouton-Rothschild Jeroboam The 1945 Chateau Mouton Rothschild Jeroboam is among the most expensive
wines in the world. It was bought by an anonymous buyer at an auction at the renowned Christie’s in 1997. This superb single bottle comes from what is considered to be by
wine enthusiasts one of the finest vintages to come out of the 20th century. This is one of the many
wines that will probably be held for its value rather than drunk.
1787 Chateau Lafitte
A superb bottle of 1787 Chateau Lafitte sold at an auction at Christie’s in London, England in December of 1985. This was among the superb
wines that were originally reported to come from the cellar of Thomas Jefferson, the former US President, and this is thought to be among the most expensive thanks to it having the initials Th.J etched into the glass of the bottle for the president. This is among the
wines that have made their way into the hands of the American tycoon Bill Koch, who became very suspicious of the origins of the four bottles he had paid a great deal of money for. Eventually, he paid to have someone investigate into the investigation that had originally debunked the supposed origin, of what was, at the time of purchasing, among one of the most expensive
wines in the world.
Shipwrecked 1907 Heidsieck
These hundred year old bottles of Champagne from the Heidsieck vineyard in Champagne took more than eighty years to reach their final destination and so of course they are among some of the oldest and most expensive
wines in the world.
The
wines were originally shipped to the Russian Imperial family in the year of 1916. However they were shipwrecked just off the coast of Finland and this caused the
wines to remain lost at sea until divers uncovered
wines of more than 200 bottles in 1997.
The very expensive bottles are now being sold to some of the more wealthy guests who stay at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Moscow. Perhaps it is not the taste or the label of the
wine that has them listed as being among some of most expensive and
very best wines in the world but rather the history.
Montrachet 1978
The Montrachet 1978 stands out on the list of the most valuable
wines due to the fact that it is not only one of the most expensive bottles of
wine in the world, but also that it can be drunk. The Montrachet 1978 was sold at Sotheby in New York in 2001 with the lot of
wines consisting of seven bottles that fetched an amazing $23,000 per bottle. This is considered to be an extraordinary price for white in the world of collectors. The reason the price went so high is due to the fact that there were two bidders in the room who were avid collectors and neither of them wanted to relinquish the
wines, both wanting to add them to their collections. When the hammer went down on these
wines they were listed as being one of the most expensive in the world sold at auction.
The Very Expensive Broken Bottle
On a lighter note is the story of one of the
wines that got broke. A
wine collector went to auction and paid a large sum of money for a bottle of Chateau Margaux and luckily had it insured. When showing it off later at a restaurant in celebration of the win, a waiter knocked the table it was resting on and the bottle fell to floor and smashed. This is one of the few
wines that suffered this fate and happens to be one of the most valuable of
wines broken.
